Well, here we are with another season disappearing at an alarming speed. Bowls-wise we have not done as well as in other years but we have had great successes in other areas !
Recently we held a 'Working Party Week'. A slight change from our working party days in that Terry was at the Green all week organising volunteers on to the most appropriate jobs. The Green needed a lot of TLC which over the five days started with 0.5"scarifying, 4.0" (professional) Hollow Tining, a second scarifying, and a further 3.0" (professional) hollow tining. it sounds a lot of work and indeed it was. Approximately 150 wheel-barrow loads of dead moss etc. was taken off the Green; a staggering amount. The Green was then dressed with a treatment to break down old roots and allow new roots to grow through the winter period. On top of all this nine tonnes of a mixture of Grass Seed and topsoil was applied.
Heavy timbers have been purchased and failing edge boards have been renewed. As if is not enough the hedge has been cut and tidied, the Green frontage to the main road has been cut back, and the new shed has been fitted out.
To help feed the inner Club member we have also purchased a second Oven for Club dinners. A commendable 150 man-hours and the best part of £2000 have been spent on the Green and premises this year. In October we will be holding our AGM and we invite all of our members to come along and help shape the Club's future.
Bredfield Bowls Club is open to both sexes, all ages and all abilities. The sport's fascination is in its apparent 'easiness'; - what could be simpler than rolling a 'wood' on a nice piece of grass? Getting the 'bias', 'weight' and 'green' right is not something picked up overnight. But gaining that skill is an interesting (and often frustrating) journey. If it was that easy it would cease to be a sport !
